TRAIL
PROJECTS

JOIN THE TRAIL PROJECTS TEAM

Our trail projects team assists the USFS with maintaining trails in the Wilderness. The projects are varied but typically fall into one of three areas:

  • Noxious weed elimination

  • Overnight Llama trips to clean up remote camping areas

  • Large projects where ESWA funds and/or aids in the implementation or repair of permanent structures such as signs and bridges

Noxious Weeds

Noxious weeds can drastically affect wildland plant and animal communities, damage watersheds, increase soil erosion, and adversely impact recreation.

ESWA funds programs and leads events to fight noxious weeds in our Wilderness areas.

You can donate or volunteer to help us fight this ongoing battle.

Overnight Llama Trips

ESWA and the USFS perform 3 or more overnight Llama trips each summer. These trips are typically a long weekend 5 to 10 miles into the Wilderness.

Our campers help clean up the trail along the way and disperse illegal fire rings while also educating hikers they meet along the way about the Wilderness.

See our Events Page to learn more about the next Llama Trip.

Signs in the Forest

ESWA has partnered with the USFS to continuously improve and update the signs in our Wilderness area from trail heads to intersections.

Donor funds help to purchase the signs and our trail projects volunteers help install them.

Bridges

The USFS limits the construction of bridges in the Wilderness. However, providing access to the Wilderness is critical to educating the public about the importance of maintaining our Wilderness areas.

ESWA uses donor funds and volunteer effort to help the USFS repair and replace bridges over large creeks or rivers that impede hiker's ability to access the Wilderness.
